Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Normal healthy gums do not bleed when brushed. Bleeding is a sign of inflammation. And this is due to the presence of local irritants; i.e., bacteria in plaque or tartar. Periodic professional cleanings are necessary at least twice per year to minimize the accumulation of these irritants. Daily maintenance at home with brushing and flossing using proper oral hygiene technique can keep the gums healthy.
Why do I grind my teeth?
Grinding and clenching of the teeth is usually stress and anxiety related. For students, it’s especially pronounced during mid-terms and finals week.
What is a nightguard or occlusal guard?
A nightguard is a hard acrylic splint designed to cover the teeth of a single arch. Its primary purpose is to reduce teeth grinding and protect both the teeth and the jaw joint (TMJ) from the significant pressure that can result from this grinding.
We offer professionally made nightguards crafted from durable materials, such as hard acrylic, and customized to fit your specific bite. In contrast, over-the-counter nightguards are typically a “one size fits all” solution made from “boil and mold” materials. If these are not fitted correctly, they may exacerbate grinding issues and intensify pain.
How often should I get a teeth cleaning?
For most patients it is recommended to get a teeth cleaning every 6 months or twice a year. However, it depends on your oral health needs. For example, if you have presence or history of gum disease you may require more frequent cleanings and maintenance.
Why do I need to take X-rays? Are there any risks?
X-rays are necessary for a comprehensive exam in order for the clinician to diagnose correctly. X-rays shows cavities between teeth or underneath existing restorations, bone loss, infections, cysts, tumors and positions of unerupted impacted teeth.
Digital x-rays used in dental offices today is lightyears away from that of past generations, and the amount of external radiation poses little to no threat to patients, according to the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR). With digital x-rays, the radiation risk is very small. A full set of dental x-rays is comparable to the amount of radiation you absorb from your smartphone, tv, computer, or riding an airplane.
Patient Reviews
“I was very impressed and appreciated how kind and punctual everyone was. I hardly had to wait once I checked in. I also liked how thorough the dental hygienist was with cleaning my teeth. She gave me great advice about my teeth and how to prevent cavities/gingivitis. Lastly, they are sooo sanitary, I’m huge on handwashing and clean spaces. They did not disappoint! Overall, I did not expect much from a school dental clinic but they exceeded my expectations! Highly recommend you take full advantage of your ucship!”
